PLUMBING ICONS: SUPER MARIO AND LUIGI

Super Mario is a plumber

Seeing it’s the holidays, we thought we would post a fun article.

Today we would like to pay homage to an icon of the plumbing industry. A man whose contribution to plumbing rivals that of “Joe the Plumber”. We want to pay homage to Super Mario, and what he has done for our industry.

I’m sure many of you remember when the “Mario Brothers” first video game came out back in 1983. It was created by Shigeru Miyamoto, who is widely credited as being the Walt Disney of video game development (his other credits include “Donkey Kong”, “Zelda”, “Star Fox” and “Wii Music”).  The Super Mario video game was instrumental in resurrecting the video game industry from the “gaming crash” of 1982; and catapulting Nintendo to the top of the gaming world. Furthermore, it was one of the first video games that actually had a narrative behind it. Not only did the gamer have a mission, but he/she took on the persona of Mario (or Luigi), the plumber.

There are many plumbing references throughout the Mario franchise. For instance, there are constant pipe and tree root graphics throughout all of the games. As well, the back story has Mario and his brother Luigi owning Mario Brothers Plumbing which is located in the Flatbush section of Brooklyn.

Some of the Mario Brothers Plumbing taglines are:

“You clog ‘em, we clear ‘em” and they were said to be New York City’s best plumbing service”

“The customer is always wet.”

Super Mario is an icon of the plumbing industry because it shows plumbers in a positive light (and cartoonishly superhero way). The Mario franchise has sold over 41 million copies worldwide, and propelled plumbers (and what we do) into the subconscious of a younger generation. This is important, because plumbers are not always portrayed in the best light by the media. How often do you see a television show that glorifies the work of a plumber like they do doctors, lawyers, and police officers? Although Super Mario Bros. is a completely different medium, it still has a massive reach, and has portrayed plumbing as a noble profession.

And that’s why we think Mario is an icon of the plumbing industry.
